ADVENTIST ENGLISH CONVERSATION SCHOOL

History of AECS

The Early Starting of AECS

Adventist English Conversation School (AECS) first started in 1970 when the Union board members took action to request the Far Eastern Division Office to approve the operation of the school in Jakarta. It was necessary to request approval because of the need of overseas workers’ budget to support and help the school to start.

When the approval came, Pastor M.E. Thorman who was then the Director of Education Department was appointed to organize the school. One of the main objectives of the school is to introduce the Lord and communicate the gospel to the students through English, and help them discover what the gospel says and apply its meaning to their own life.

When the school was being established it was necessary to place a call for Edwin L. Moore, and Adventist oriented English teacher and a student missionary from Andrews University, USA to come to Jakarta and teach the language.

Pastor M.E. Thorman and Mr. Edwin L. Moore assisted by Mrs. Margaret Kaunang the former secretary operated the school. The first enrollment was quite a total number of persons with only one voluntary English teacher - the school was running.

The interest to learn English Language increased as well as the enrollment from term to term in the years. And the school called some student missionaries to come and assist Mr. Edwin.

1976 Pastor M.E. Thorman was summoned to hold a new position as Director of Education and Language School fro the far Eastern and South East Asia Division and Mr. C.G. Oliver took over the directorship for the Education and Language School.

Due to the demand and the increased interest of the students to learn English language the Education Department of Union suggested that it would be appropriate to open a language school also in Jakarta, Bandung, Kalimantan, Manado and another areas over in Indonesia.
